Ever wonder what draws people to the Gothic world? Is it because they have dark and brooding personalities or is it because they’re original and creative and the Gothic subculture supports all of this? I don’t think any one reason is more authentic than the other and let’s admit it – the Gothic clothing, Gothic music, and Gothic jewelry is really pretty cool!
If you love Goth you may even get asked some pretty silly questions. Ever get asked what time of the day you like better – day or night? Or maybe what kind of music, literature, fashion, clubs, or historical eras you like best? Did you ever know that the Gothic Subculture officially began in 1979 when the song “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” was released. This song really hit a cord with people with its eerie and mysterious sounds. It ended up taking off on its own and the Gothic world is considered a split from the world of Punk which was a large movement of that time. While it was different, many people feel that Goth and Punk go hand in hand.
Since the Gothic subculture is known to be dark, it makes sense that much of the supposed evil and fear that is associated with this world happens during the evening hours. This is when all of those frightening creatures appear and scare the normal course of living. Vampires, werewolves, zombies, and ghosts are all known to travel about in the wee hours of the morning when chaos is being caused by those crazy devils and witches. Some people love the night time because of these frightening images and some of them just have a preference for the darkness because their body tempos are more active during these hours.
It’s during the night that many people suffer from that age old myth of Full Moon Madness. You know, that time of the month when the moon is full, demons are on the prowl, and evil spirits are haunting innocent citizens. I don’t know about you but I don’t think that there’s any doubt that some crazy things happen during full moons. Even though scientists say that it’s just a subconscious effect that is associated with the moistness levels of our brains, it does seem like crazy things happen during these times. That’s part of what makes the Gothic subculture oh so fun and crazy!
A true Goth sees beauty in both life and death. They accept death as a part of life and they love both the light and the darkness. In response they tend to love cemeteries and find them both beautiful and peaceful. That’s why you’ll find Gothic creatures roaming there where they feel very peaceful. Black ravens and cat are famous Goth animals who love the cemetery so grab your favorite Halloween costume and take a walk through the on the dark side on your holiday – have some fun that’s out of the norm for a change!
The Cathedral of Notre Dame is one of the most beautiful and well known churches in France. What many don’t know is that the church was one of the very first to be built in the ancient Gothic style. Work began sometime during the 12th century but was not completed until the 13th century. Many of us know that France was the birthplace for the incredible Baroque style but it was also the birthplace for Gothic art as well. Gothic art was originally known as French Art and it is this style that contributes to the stunning cathedrals and basilicas that litter the countryside and the city itself. Both Gothic paintings and sculptures are known to have a spatial and naturalistic feel. There’s no doubt that these ancient artifacts are just as unique as the Goth image in today’s culture. Our culture expresses their interpretation through clothing, jewelry, and music just to name a few.
